The Altima has been a solid performer
for Nissan since its last redesign
in 2002, which brought the mid-size
sedan back from the brink of being
doomed to rental-cardom. For 2005,
the Altima boasts a vastly improved,
all-new interior as well as some
exterior styling enhancements.
Available in six trim levels, the
2.5 S is one step up from the bare-bones
base model. My tester came equipped
with the SL package, which includes
an upgraded Bose audio system, alloy
wheels, trip computer, steering-wheel
audio controls and other niceties.
Accessories aside, the redesigned
interior is roomy, comfortable and
downright attractive.
The 2.5-liter 175-horsepower engine
is adequate for everyday driving,
but hesitates slightly when asked
to accelerate quickly. Handling,
however, is excellent, with a tighter
suspension giving the Altima a sportier
feel than your average family sedan.
For more power, upgrade to the 250-horsepower
V-6 or the new performance-oriented
SE-R.
Always a solid choice as a family
sedan, the Altima is even better
for 2005. While drivers looking for
a family sedan with reasonable performance
will appreciate the 2.5 liter models,
moms, dads and other practical folks
with a hidden desire to push the
envelope will find the V-6, and especially
the new SE-R, particularly appealing.
